RCD SAFETY SWITCH INSTALLATION IN PERTH

A RCD Safety Switch can save lives. Protect your family and your employees by ensuring you have adequate RCD Safety Switches installed in your home or workplace.

Acura electricians can install new RCD safety switches or test your existing RCDs for compliance in a wide range of suburbs in Perth, Western Australia. We can replace a faulty RCD safety switch or upgrade an insufficient one. We do not charge a call out fee and all our work comes with a Safety Certificate which needs to be provided for settlement when you are selling.

What do RCD Safety Switches do?

A Residual Current Device or RCD monitors the flow of electricity from the main switchboard and prevents electrocution by cutting the electricity supply if an imbalance in the current is detected. By installing at least two RCDs, the property's circuits can be divided evenly. This ensures some light and power remain if one RCD operates and also minimises faulty operation from appliances which have low-level leakage current.

How many RCD's do I need to install?

The West Australian State Government introduced new RCD Safety Switch regulations in August 2009, requiring a minimum of two RCDs to be installed in all Perth residential properties subject to sale, rent or hire, to protect all lighting and power circuits.

FAQ's RE RCD Safety switches:

Whose responsibility is it to have RCDs fitted?

Ensuring RCD's are installed and tested regularly is the responsibility of:

  • the vendor (seller) prior to the transfer of ownership or,
  • the landlord prior to commencement of a rental agreement or,
  • any conscientious householder

RCD installations should only be undertaken by a licenced electrician such as Acura Electrical to ensure compliance with government regulations and to enable a Electrical Safety Certificate can be issued.

How many RCDs should be fitted to my house?

The number of RCDs you require depends on the number of your electrical circuits. The minimum requirement is two RCDs which is what is needed for a 4 bedroom two bathroom home.

However, according to AS/NZS 3000, none of the RCDs will protect more than three circuits and all the lighting, power, pool and SPA circuits must be protected. Therefore, sometimes even more than 2 Safety Switches required by Standard and Regulation.

Our expert electricians can recommend the number of RCDs you need for complying with the Law and having rest after selling or renting out.

Up to $15,000 penalties are applied for breaching the Regulation.

HOW DOES AN RCD WORK AND WHY IT IS YOUR ONLY CHANCE TO SURVIVE?

RCD is continuously monitoring the current flowing into a circuit and flowing out. Ideally they are equal. However, if an imbalance of more than 30mA is detected, which can be diverted through your body to earth, it will cut the power supply within 300ms. 30mA is a current that within 300ms your body cannot respond to meaning you cannot be electrocuted. This is the most useful safety device you can ever have in your home or workplace.
RCDs have a test button for testing its operation by you, and it is important you do so at least once a month.

Testing the tripping current, especially the tripping time of the RCDs and the condition of your wiring requires very expensive testing equipment, and a great deal of knowledge and experience that not all electricians possess.
